Signalling
Efforts are being put in on a massive scale to replace the worn out Signalling gears, shelf type relays and GRS 5E point machines at all stations on priority basis for enhancing safety and reliability of Signalling assets.
Confidence in Signalling is of paramount importance, hence Signal and Telecom Department of South Western Railway has taken up an intensive training and counseling program for the maintenance staff in addition to analysing the unsafe failure of equipments at higher level, so that corrective action plan is formulated to avoid recurrence.
Telecommunication
Microwave:
South Western Railway has a multi channel digital microwave communication connecting Jolarpet- Bangalore & Bangalore-Mysore in Bangalore and Mysore divisions and Dharwad . Vasco and Londa- Belgaum . Miraj sections of Hubli division. Analog microwave system exists from Bangalore to Penukonda. Microwave network is being used for speech and data communication within the Railway as well as connecting to other Railway headquarters, adjacent divisions & Railway Board .
Optical Fibre Cable:
OFC System has been commissioned in the sections Bangalore-Dharmavaram, Bangalore-Mysore, Hubli-Bellary, Bangalore-Tumkur-Hubli, Bangalore-Whitefield, Mysore-Hassan, Tornagalu-Ranjitpur & Bangalore-Salem for a total length of 1106 Rkms.
OFC works are in progress in the sections Hubli-Londa-Madgaon, Sakaleshpur-Mangalore & Londa-Miraj.
OFC works are sanctioned in the sections Bangalore-Jolarpet, Hassan-Arsikere, as shown in Figure B
6 Quad Cable:
For Control, Block, LC Gate & Emergency communication, 6 quad cables have been completed in the sections Bangalore-Dharmavaram, Bangalore-Mysore, Hubli-Bellary, Tornagallu-Ranjitpura, Bangalore-Tumkur, Bangalore-Salem.
6 Quad cables works are completed in sections Hubli-Londa-Shedbal, Hubli-Tumkur, Londa-Vasco, & Hassan-Sharvanbelgola total 1993 RKms.
6 Quad cables works are in progress in the sections Mysore-Hassan, Sakaleshpur-Mangalore, Birur-Shimoga, Londa-Miraj & Whitefield-Jolarpet .
In PWP 2007-08, 6 quad works are proposed in the sections Bangalore-Whitefield &Devanahali, & Hospet-Toranagallu. OFC in the section Satya Sai Prashantinilayam-Dharmavaram. Mysore to Chamarajpet and Shimoga to Talaguppe sections, 6 quad is included in the GC works.
E-1 Circuits for STD facility:
The zonal HQ/Hubli has been connected to divisional HQ, i.e., SBC & MYS, through E-1 circuits (30 channels). Hubli is also connected to Secunderabad, Chennai, Guntakal, Mumbai and Railway Board with E-1 circuits for STD facility. Anywhere in India can be connected through STD. TAX exchange has been installed at Hubli and Uniform Numbering Scheme also has been implemented. Within the Railway all the exchanges can be contacted by direct dialing without any STD code, including main exchanges and satellite exchanges .
Telephone Exchanges:
All the exchanges in SWRly, Main Exchange - 27 & intercom Exchange . 13, are now electronic exchanges. This includes the major electronic exchanges provided at divisional HQ, i.e., Bangalore, Mysore & Hubli. Direct STD facilities have been established with even circuits interconnecting all the divisional exchanges .
Train traffic control communication is provided through Railway owned RE & 6 quad cables and OFC cables. Replacement of OH lines owned by BSNL & Railways are in fast progress.
Auto Announcement System has been provided in important stations of this Railway.
Public Address System has been provided in 36 stations of this Railway.
BSNL telephones are provided at 261 stations of this Railway, out of 268 stations.
Wherever OFC system has been commissioned, Railway Auto Telephones have been provided at all the stations. Total 145 Railway Auto Telephones are provided till date.
Call Centers:
A Call Center has been established in coordination with RCIL. By dialing 139 anywhere in Karnataka, the train enquiry can be accessed including reservation, train timings, train running schedules, fare structures etc. Anywhere in Karnataka this facility can be accessed by dialing 139 in local rate.
Coach Guidance System has been commissioned at Bangalore Cantt Yeshwanthpur Bangarpet and Krishnarajapuram.
Satellite phone:
Satellite phones are provided at the divisional ARTs of Hubli (2 No), Bangalore (3 No) & Mysore (3 No) and at the headquarters Central Control (2 nos.) for emergent communications in case of accidents etc.
Cellular phones:
Cellular phones have been provided upto JA Grade officers of HQ and Sr Scale branch officers of divisions and workshops for timely communication with CUG (closed user group) facility.
In SWRly, all the drivers & guards of all trains have been provided with Walkie Talkie sets and in all stations 25W Walkie Talkie sets are provided so that driver/guard can contact the SM at any time. The 25W sets provided at the stations can also be used for contacting the other maintance/Security staff by changing the channels.
Voice Recording of Control Office:
Voice recording of control office has been provided at Hubli Bangalore & Mysore divisions.
PRS, UTS, FOIS, COIS, Train control Charting, Crew Management System & MIS Networks has been established in SWRly.
Railnet:
Railnet has been established in SWRly. Direct link with Railway Board (2 Mbps) has been established from Hubli. Hubli to Bangalore & Mysore divisional HQ SBC-RWF/YNK & SBC-CAO/BNC has been connected through 2 Mbps systems. Railnet connectivity to the Hubli workshop commissioned. At HQ and divisions, all the branch offices has been networked for Railnet & Internet. A 2 Mbps leased line has been provided at Hubli from BSNL for Internet connectivity and this has been included to the divisions and workshops.

Hot line is commisioned for Disaster Management Communication between Railway Board (CRB) to Disaster Management Cell Hubli.
